VENICE CARNIVAL

The Venice Carnival begins on February 16th with the first part of the Venetian festival on water. The Rio di Cannaregio turns into a stage with lights and shows on the water. The next day it becomes the location of the first gondola and costumes parades (from 11:00 to 14:00). At the fashion show will follow tastings (of cicheti, fritole and galani) and animations for the participants.

February 23rd there's a competition to celebrate the most beautiful mask (at 11:00 in Piazza San Marco). At 16:00 there is the Festa delle Marie with a parade.

One of the most iconic moments of the festival is the Flight of the Angel held every year in Piazza San Marco at 12:00. The Maria of the Carnival of the previous year will fly over the festive crowd descending scenographically from the bell tower. On February 11th it is instead the turn of the Flight of the Eagle: a second flight but whose protagonist is a character from the show or from the world of sport.

On March 5th, the Carnival officially ends with the Svolo del Leon, in which the symbol of Venice (the winged Lion) flies from the bell tower to the crowd closing the festivities with an event of symbolic and scenic power.

With the Epiphany end the Christmas holidays and begins the Carnival which brings fancy dress parties and parades of allegorical floats. March 5th is Shrove Tuesday then Lent season begins. Political satire, the world of comics and television characters will be some of the themes chosen to set up the carts.
